How do I use Test Center?

FEATURES AVAILABLE TO INSTRUCTORS:
Instructors have access to all the features available to students, plus the following features.

  • Welcome - As an instructor, you are responsible for setting the class name and password for your students. To change the class name, or password, click on "Edit Profile". As well setting your basic features, you can set the class name and password here. Type your class password in both blanks, to ensure you do not make a mistake. Important: Do NOT make the class password the same as your own account password!

Any class information that changes will automatically be updated on the student accounts of anyone currently registered in your class.

  • Notes and Announcements - You can use this window to make general announcements to all the students in your class. They will see what you post the next time they visit the main page.

To add or edit announcements, click on the "Edit Announcements" link. Use the "Add New Announcement" form to type in a class announcement, or edit an existing announcement by clicking on the Announcement Date.

  • Tests - In this window are all the tests that you can do. But as an instructor, you are probably more concerned with composing tests for your students. Any class tests that you create will be available for all students registered in your class.

To create a test for your class, click on "Modify/Create Class Tests". You will be presented with links to two forms: "Random..." and "Custom...", both being similar to the student test forms. A random test will select questions over a broad range of topics, whereas a custom test will let you choose the percentage of questions that should come from each topic.

In both types of tests, you choose a Test Name (what you want your test to be known as), and the number of questions that should appear in your test (max 60). If you want the test to start immediately, check the "Start Test Immediately" box, otherwise the test will be created and you will go back to the main page.

At this point, you need to decide which mark(s) you want to take. Remember, students can take any test over and over, so its up to you whether you want to accept:

    • First Mark - the student may do the test as many times as he/she likes, but only the mark from their first test will be counted.
    • Highest Mark - the student may do the test as many times as he/she likes, but only the student's highest mark will be counted.
    • All Marks - the student may do the test as many times as he/she likes, and all their marks will be counted.

For a custom test, you must also specify the percentage of questions to come from each section. The percentages must add up to 100%. If you want to ensure that certain sections are equally weighted, select Equal% in those sections. If you have any sections set to Equal%, Test Center will automatically determine what percentage of questions should come from that/those section(s).

Leaving all sections set to Equal% is essentially the same as creating a test using the random form.

  • Test History - This window shows you the scores of all tests you have started, completed, or abandoned. You can also view the test scores of all the students in your class.

Printer-Friendly Format - displays a more detailed test scores page in an easy to print format.

Access/Excel Format - displays a more detailed test scores page in a format that can be imported into Access or Excel. Click on the link, and save the page as an HTML file. You can then import the HTML file into Access or Excel.

Test scores are listed for the entire class, and all tests, but if you would like to view the results from just a single test, the option is there.

  • Deadlines - This window is a good place to remind students in your class of important deadlines. You can add, edit, or delete class deadlines by clicking on the "Edit Class Deadlines" link.

Add a deadline by clicking on the "Add New Deadline" link, filling in the date field (in mm/dd/yyyy format) and typing a description of what the deadline is. Deadline will be posted for all students to see when you click on the "Post Deadline" button.

Edit an existing deadline by clicking on the deadline date, changing the date and/or description fields, and clicking on the "Update Deadline" button.

Delete a deadline by clicking on the appropriate "DEL" link, and choosing "OK" on the pop-up window.

THE TEST WINDOW:
Click on a test name from the Tests window to launch a test. If the test you selected had been saved by you in the past, you will continue from where you left off when you saved the test. If the test was completed or abandoned, you will start the test over.

The test window is divided into several sections. On the left you will see two bars, one tells you your current score, and the other will indicate how long you have spent on the test so far. In the middle of the page is the question itself. This can be a multiple choice question, fill-in-the-blank, matching, or a grouping of multiple choice questions. On the right are three buttons, "Quit", "Quit and Save", and "Submit" (or "Next").

When you have answered the question in the middle, you submit your answer by clicking on the "Submit" button. A detailed answer will show up on the page. When you are finished looking at the answer, click on the "Next" button to continue with the test.

At any time, you can quit the test. To quit the test, and record the score (abandon the test), click on "Quit". The next time you attempt this test, you will start from the beginning.

You may wish to quit the test, but continue it later on. To do this, click on "Quit and Save". This will save your current progress for this test. To continue this test later on, simply clicking on the test name in the Tests window on the main page.

All tests are timed from when you first start the test, until the moment you complete (or abandon) it. This means that even if you have saved your test, the clock is still running! If you are doing an instructor test with a time limit, saving the test and coming back later is probably not a good idea.

Important: DO NOT attempt to click the back button to try and re-answer incorrect answers. The test window automatically checks for that, and clicking back could prematurely end your test, leaving you with whatever score you had at that point.
